Raphaël Musical Instruments – Guitar & Keyboard

Back in December I was toying around with the Raphaël JavaScript Library and learned enough to realize I could use it to get one step closer to my mentally vague, yet personally exciting ideas of online jamming/music education/writing/etc.

After some fun experimentation I created a couple simple frameworks for musical instruments that would be quick loading, a versatile learning tool, and possibly even interactive (that’s the next step in my master plan), not to mention a good alternative to using flash. And here they are:

Raphaël Guitar

The first is Raphaël Guitar. This is a very simple drawing of the fretboard of a guitar. Believe it or not, I used some of the guitar building knowledge I gained while working in Shanghai to put this puppy together. Mainly the fret spacing going up the neck; the formula I used is same formula luthiers use to space the frets properly in order to achieve the correct pitch on any given fret. In other words, it’s just like the real thing.

Raphaël Keyboard

The other instrument I drew is a simple piano keyboard. It’s scalable (no pun intended) in the sense that you can make it as many octaves as you like and alter the size to your liking by just changing a few variables which are pretty easy to see right at the top of the file (the guitar is the same way). I’ve highlighted a few keys just to give an example of how it could be used. Like Raphaël Guitar this is pretty bare bones but could have many uses down the road.

My New Guitar Case

No, no, not my new haircut (although I need one). I scavenged this puppy from the depths of a pile of discarded cases at my work. It looks beat up, but I can just play the “I’m a traveling musician” card. Despite it’s outward appearance, the inside is actually very nice, lined with an immaculate brown shag material that makes me want to take a nap in it. That is the story of my case.

Here are some pics of last night’s micro gig at Beedees. I met these guys a few weeks ago and we’ve just been having fun playing some cover songs and such. There’s also some pics of the cover band that went on after us. They sounded awesome.

Ok ok, fine. After much over thinking and babysitting of this song I am finally letting it go into the wild. This song is one of my favorites that I’ve made purely on the keyboard so far. It mixes a few styles including reggae and jazz. I think it’s pretty cool, let me know what you think!

Making Music Here in China

Since I was a little limited on what I could bring to China I had to leave a lot of my recording gear at home, well actually everything except for my laptop. Luckily the guy living here before me had a small M-Audio Oxygen 8 keyboard that he was nice enough to leave with me, what a gentleman. I’ve been messing around with it and have started a couple of projects that I will hopefully get done by this weekend. In some ways I think that limiting yourself actually opens more doors as far as creativity, sort of simplifies the process a bit. New songs to come shortly.

LowFat Show at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company Tonight
