Facebook Status Widget for WordPress

January 4th, 2009

Recently I’ve been using Facebook more and more and I thought; hey, it would be cool if you could feed your Facebook status into your blog.  I was using Twitter to log my random thoughts and actions which were then aggregated on my blog’s sidebar but it would be a lot easier if I could do it through Facebook since I’m on there more often. A one stop shop of sorts.  So after some searching I came across the Status Press plugin by Adam Walker Cleaveland.  It worked great but had some room for improvement, mainly ease of usage.  Then after more searching I found that Brian D. Goad took the plugin and widgetized it, dude so much easier (still mad props to Adam for his ingenuity).  Here’s what you do:

  1. Download the Status Press Widget.
  2. Log in to Facebook and go to this url: http://www.new.facebook.com/minifeed.php?filter=11
  3. Scroll down and find the “My Status” link, right click and copy it’s location.  This is your Facebook status RSS feed.
  4. Then just paste that feed into the “Status URL Feed” field of the widget setup.

Works like a charm.

There are some instructions floating around on how to find your status feed which involve locating the mini feed in your Facebook profile, but it seems with the arrival of the “new” Facebook those instructions no longer work.  The link above, however, does still work so you can easily get it there.

I see this is posted the same exact day I was thinking the same exact thing for the same exact reason!

Thanks for sharing! I’ve felt it unfortunate that the rest of the world who isn’t on Facebook is unable to see my witty and clever status updates.

What a coincidence! I know what you mean. Witty status updates are prime. Glad I could point you in the right direction.

does this still work? i can’t find the my status link or an rss feed for status updates at all.

you would think that this would be an obvious feature for fb. of course they want to force you the their site for ads etc… still can’t figure why another site hasn’t overthrown them, but that’s another topic.

    thx

Dude to be honest I’m not sure if it still works with the new facebook… I’m living in China right now and facebook is blocked here, yay oppression. Now there may be other plugins available.

I read that facebook is no longer making status feeds public because its too easy to violate privacy. You can still subscribe to your notifications with rss, but who wants to publish their notifications?

The link to this plugin no longer works. Havent found a good plugin to show facebook status, but Lifestream is working for other accounts. Alot of other accounts.

The FB status plugin does not work any more for Word press. You know any real solution to update wordpress blogs with FB status that work since FB changed the layout of the page??

  7. Thanks for the helpful post. I had been searching for something relevant and found your web site in the process.. I will definitely be back again for more.

Actually this still “works” with the new api. The only difference is you have to use a different account(a fake acct you setup or one of your friends). The string to put in the feed box is as follows
    [code]
    http://www.facebook.com/feeds/friends_status.php?id=111111111111111&key=1a1a1a1a1a&format=rss20/code
Just have a friend subscribe to your feed and use the appropriate string :-) You can view at mosalar.com
