How to Access Blocked Websites in China

OK, one thing I’ve learned since living in China is that browsing the internet SUCKS!  You can’t access anything and it makes finding what you’re looking for extremely frustrating.  From what I gathered it has to do with something called The Great (Fi*re) Wall of China.  I’m not typing it out properly because I’ve noticed that all the websites that talk about it are blocked here…what a surprise.  Guess it’s too vulgar.  After much google searching and trying different methods the best way I’ve found to visit blocked sites is by using a free proxy service.  I don’t know too much about them but from what I’ve read you don’t really want to use them to access sites that contain personal information like banks and credit cards because they can be insecure.  With that said, the one I’ve had the most luck with is:

  • *7/28/11 I removed the link because it now takes you to a survey scam.  I ended up using http://www.vpnaccounts.com/ for my stay in China.  Nothing but good reviews.

A few months ago when they did this mass-block of social networking websites most of the methods to bypass the firewall worked well enough. But it’s getting more and more difficult to access blocked websites. So far the only thing working really well for me is Freedur.

I use a VPN also. I read about them at http://www.bestvpninchina.com. There’s a few reviews, and the site is recent, so none of the VPNs on there are blocked.
